Hi, I’m Cherice, Founder and Principal Instructor at Making It SewFun. My sewing journey began as a little girl hand-making clothes for my Barbies. I would use scraps of fabric, paper towels, newspaper, or whatever else I could find, much to my mom’s frustration (lol).

While in high school, my best friend convinced me to sign up for home economics so we could be in class together. She elected to take sewing versus cooking, so I did as well. I LOVED sewing class and discovered a new passion that set me on a career path in fashion. Ironically, my best friend hated sewing and didn’t pass. Once my mom saw that I was committed, she gave me my first sewing machine on my 15th birthday. I’ve been sewing and creating beautiful things ever since. (Thanks, Mom!)

I started Making It SewFun in 2004 because I wanted to share that feeling — the one you get when you make something with your own hands and realize you’re more capable than you thought. Nearly 1,000 students later, that’s still what we work toward in every single class.

Our You Can Make It® program is a structured 7-level curriculum — the only one of its kind in Chicago. I built it so every student always knows where they are, what they’re making, and where they’re headed next. No guessing, no confusion — just a clear path forward.

Today, I enjoy sharing my love for fabric and sewing by teaching others how to create. I hope to inspire the next generation to love working with their hands while appreciating the process. Under my direction, students become confident sewists, build self-confidence, and practice discipline with each project.
